East Boston reigns in Boston City League track final — again

ROXBURY — In an effort that came down to the very last event, a strong performance from Charlestown wasn’t enough to unseat the East Boston boys indoor track team as the long-reigning Boston City League champion Tuesday night at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

Trailing Charlestown by four points entering the 1600 sprint medley, East Boston’s relay team won the event with a three-minute, 58.27-second time to secure a fifth-straight league title. The win also kept East Boston undefeated over as many years.

Pierre-Yvan Koutelle played a large role in the win, winning the 300-meter run (37.07 seconds) and taking third in the 55-meter dash (6.95 seconds). Johan Sepulveda found success as well with second-place finishes in the 1,000-meter run (2:52.11) and the two-mile run (11:07.58), and so did Roberto Dubon with a 1:35.48 mark in the 600-meter run for second.

New Mission finished third in the meet (54 points), while Latin Academy (43 points) and Brighton (38) rounded out the top five.

“It was a big win, everything we did, we’ve been grinding from the beginning of the year,” said East Boston head coach Garcia Dalzon moments after his team erupted over the victory. “We’ve been undefeated for five years, so it was important to get this last one. … It was just a total team effort. Everybody put in their full effort and they believed in each other.”

A disqualification in the 800-meter relay cost Charlestown, as a lead entering the last leg was erased by a violation on the transfer. East Boston went on to take the event with a 1:38.91 time. Jaison Gil Martinez’s false start in the 55-meter dash, despite taking the best time in the preliminaries, also hurt a bit.

Charlestown had plenty of shine outside of the slight miscues, though, with Adnan Abdirahman claiming the one-mile (4:39.54), two-mile (10:45.43) and 1,000-meter (2:50.96) runs, and with Jozane Porter winning the 55-meter dash (6.88 seconds). Porter, Gil Martinez and John Basabe also took second, third and fourth in the 300-meter run, and Juan Basabe took the crown in the long jump (19 feet, 7.5 inches).

“I’ve got to give a big shoutout to Charlestown,” Dalzon said. “They really pushed us to this level. … They did a wonderful job.”

On the girls side, O’Bryant kept the other teams at bay from any sort of suspense with a dominant showing across the board. Young depth carried the Tigers to 159 points for a third straight BCL title, as the next best team (East Boston) finished with 62 points.

Latin Academy finished third with 39 points to edge Charlestown (38 points), while Burke/CASH’s 16 points was good for fifth.

“(It feels great), especially because I was once an alumni for O’Bryant, so it just brings back memories of that legacy,” said O’Bryant head coach Kamilah Rowe. “They really fought with their heart (Tuesday). Most of them (had personal records) and just fought to the finish line.”

No one athlete stood out over the rest, as sophomores Courtney Lambright and Katherine Keating, as well as junior Grace Colon, each were double winners to help the Tigers claim eight of the 11 events on the day.

Lambright aced the 300-meter run (42.92 seconds) and 55-meter hurdles (9.89 seconds) while playing a big role in relay victories. Keating sealed the 600-meter run with a 1:54.60 time and the one-mile run (5:36.72). Colon won the 1,000-meter (3:34.47) and two-mile (13:46.42) runs, but also took second in the one-mile.

Outside of Lia Van Der Linde winning the 55-meter dash (7.83 seconds) for Latin Academy, and Stephanie Faiella (long jump) and Madison Parnell (shot put) taking field events for East Boston, it was all O’Bryant in this year’s league championships.

“My depth is young, too,” Rowe said. “The future is very bright.”
