Bernie Sanders to visit Massachusetts, hold rally Friday in Springfield
Bernie Sanders is set to hold a rally Friday in Springfield, making his biggest play yet for voters in Elizabeth Warren’s home state.
The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at the MassMutual Center, 1277 Main St., in Springfield. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The Vermont senator will visit Massachusetts on the eve of the South Carolina primary, as his focus shifts to the delegate-rich Super Tuesday states that vote just days later. Massachusetts is one of the 14 states that will cast ballots on March 3.
Sanders cemented his status as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination after a resounding victory in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday. He has been drawing thousands of people to rallies across the country.
Sanders and Warren were neck-and-neck in a recent University of Massachusetts – Lowell Center for Public Opinion poll of likely Massachusetts Democratic primary voters, with 21% and 20% support respectively.
And Sanders’ campaign is one of several ramping up efforts in the Bay State ahead of next Tuesday’s primary. The senator’s campaign has an office near Nubian Square and seven state co-chairs. On Monday, his campaign rolled out 18 endorsements from current and former elected officials, including former Cambridge Mayor Kenneth Reeves, state Rep. Michael Moran (D-Boston) and former state Sen. Kathleen O’Connor Ives.
