Resolve to take smaller steps to greatness in 2020
The top three New Year’s Resolutions are pretty much always the same: 1) exercise more; 2) lose weight; and 3) save more money.
I would never say those aren’t admirable goals. They are. But they’re also a little vague, and big. And by big I mean intimidatingly so. To succeed with any goals or resolutions, therapists, psychologists and life coaches often recommend concrete goals and smaller baby steps toward a larger one. So this year, why not weave in a few others that you know you can definitely achieve, with minimal effort? After all, a little success with those might very likely jump-start your motivation to keep going and to tackle the bigger goals.
So to that end, here’s a handful of resolutions that are easy as pie, and could lead to bigger steps down the road.
Buy yourself cute workout gear
No, it isn’t the same thing as actually working out But it’s a step in the right direction — and an important one. (Seriously, who’s going to ever want to go to the gym in ugly workout gear?) There’s great performance stuff on sale this time of year, too, and it doesn’t have to be top-dollar designer pieces to be flattering. For proof, take a look at the cute Infinity Asymmetrical Racerback Sports Bra ($25.50 on champion.com) and 5809 Women’s Chatham Anorak Solid ($40 on charlesriverapparel.com) from Charles River Apparel, the local Boston company that donates 10% of that pullover’s price to outdoor adventure programs for young adults affected by cancer.
Contribute to the world
This seems like a huge one, but it absolutely isn’t. All you have to do to accomplish it this year is vote. No matter how you vote, vote. The election this fall will be one of (if not the most) important in our lifetimes, so carve out some time this next election day and get yourself to the polls.
Wear sunscreen
Build it into your moisturizer or your foundation and you won’t even have to think about it every morning. It’s possibly the easiest resolution in the entire history of all New Year’s resolutions.
Don’t text, call.
We all know the allure of a super quick note, and sometimes that’s all that’s called for. But there’s no replacement for really connecting with someone with a conversation — with the sound of a real voice, jokes that aren’t just emoji- or meme-based, and actually listening to how someone is doing. Make it a priority before you start to forget how.
Say no to fast fashion
Vogue itself is pledging a commitment to curbing environmentally harmful fabrics that don’t last more than a season, and are made with unsustainable materials in factories that treat workers unfairly. Instead, go for long-lasting pieces, and for recycled or up-cycled pieces from brands like Re;code, Patagonia, Ruby Moon, Ecoalf and bigwigs like Stella McCartney and Anya Hindmarch. And for great designer vintage or high-end second-hand pieces, lean on sites like thredUP.com, us.vestiarecollective.com and tradesy.com.
