Gronk’s overgrown kid act is getting a little old in retirement
Gronk being Gronk is getting old.
The former Patriots fan-favorite was a star on the football field but his TV commentary from the sidelines has been cringe-worthy. Since hanging up his helmet in March, Rob Gronkowski has been peddling CBD products and tickets to his “Gronk Beach” Super Bowl bash in Miami, where the “Ship” table package costs a cool $100,000.
On New Year’s Eve, Gronk was involved in embarrassing TV shenanigans with all-around nice guy Steve Harvey.
The 30-year-old eternal frat boy is famous for spiking footballs but he went too far Tuesday during Fox’s “New Year’s Eve with Steve Harvey” broadcast when the gridiron great spiked — and destroyed — a LEGO head of Harvey.
Gronk, sporting a No. 87 jersey and football helmet, then kicked LEGO pieces that spilled onto the Big Apple stage in Times Square.
“Are you serious?” an apparently shocked Harvey said as Gronk broke out his patented dance club moves. “I don’t want to work with him no more. Why is he here? Why are you here? What is wrong with you? You’re mentally imbalanced.”
New Year’s Eve ball drop broadcasts are notoriously painful to watch — think Jenny McCarthy making out with Donnie Wahlberg at midnight — but this one took the cake.
Of course, it could have been a planned stunt to boost ratings, but it was uncomfortable to watch. Gronk, however, had no regrets as he posted a play-by-play of photos of his Steve Harvey bust spike on Twitter. “Yep! I absolutely Gronk Spiked (Harvey) to spike the New Year off!! Sorry but had to do it!!” he tweeted.
Fox had no comment.
Gronk is popular but are fans going to fork over hundreds of dollars to take a selfie with the future Hall of Famer at his Super Bowl soiree? A “meet & greet” with Gronk costs $650 and gets you and a friend an autograph and selfie with the retired tight end. Oh, and there’s a catch — that price doesn’t include admission to the party.
Many, myself included, had high hopes when Fox Sports announced in October that Gronk was joining its lineup as an NFL analyst, but his small screen performance hasn’t lived up to all the hype.
Gronk’s act is wearing thin. He was a lot of fun on the field but his TV antics are amateur hour.
Fox should spike him.
