BC High edges Framingham in boys hockey clash
DORCHESTER — For a majority of Thursday’s showdown, BC High’s shots bounced off a stone wall in the form of Framingham senior goalie Jake Handy.
But the Eagles used the man-advantage to create the slightest of cracks in the stout wall Handy put up, and it proved to be the difference.
BC High received power-play goals from Matt Keohane and Colin Norton to overcome a 40-save performance from Handy and earn a 2-1 non-league win at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.
“Goals weren’t easy to come by,” said BC High coach John Flaherty as the Eagles outshot the Flyers, 42-9. “Our shooting percentage was not great but we’ll take the win against a very good, very well coached Framingham team.”
Despite getting severely outshot, Framingham (4-1-2) struck first when Will Trischitta lifted his breakaway shot just high enough for a 1-0 lead midway through the first period.
After making 17 saves in the opening frame, Handy continued his sensational performance by turning aside several chances from BC High (4-0-1) until the Eagles registered a breakthrough on the power play.
John Logan made a nice cross-ice feed to Keohane, who rocketed a one-timer from the left dot past Handy to level the score with 3:41 left in the second period.
The Eagles kept the bombardment of shots going, but couldn’t cash in until it got another power-play opportunity. This time, a deflected shot from the point found Colin Norton and the senior put his attempt into the open side of the net for the go-ahead goal with 9:30 remaining.
“It’s easy to get frustrated, but we’re doing the things we wanted to do, we just weren’t getting the results,” said Flaherty of the shot disparity. “I’m proud of how they stuck with it.”
