St. John’s Prep remains atop Div. 1
FOXBORO — Matt Duchemin capped off his high school career with a night to remember.
The All-Scholastic wide receiver hauled in a touchdown reception and had a pair of interceptions as St. John’s Prep repeated as Div. 1 Super Bowl champions with a 21-14 win over Catholic Memorial on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. The victory was sweet redemption for the Eagles, who fell to the Knights, 34-32, during the regular season.
It also marks the first time in school history that the Eagles have repeated as state champions.
A pair of touchdown runs by sophomore James Guy staked St. John’s Prep (11-1) to a 14-0 lead at the half. The Eagles’ defense was dominant in the opening 20 minutes, limiting a high-powered Catholic Memorial offense to just 78 yards of total offense.
The Prep (11-1) clung to a 14-7 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but gained some breathing room on its opening drive of the frame. After starting out on their own 27 yard line, senior quarterback Matt Crowley marched the Eagles down the field. On third and 7 from their own 41, Crowley rolled right, evaded traffic and connected with Jackson Delaney for 16 yards to get the Eagles down to the Knights 43.
Three plays later, Crowley connected with Duchemin on a 32-yard touchdown to put the Prep up 21-7.
Catholic Memorial made a last ditch effort to get back in the game with Barrett Pratt finding Zach Mitchell off a deflection for a 5-yard TD to pull the Knights within seven at 21-14. The Eagles, however, covered the ensuing onside kick to seal their second straight Super Bowl.
