Moon Journey of Mentorship by Holiday Mathis

The lunar journey of this final day of the year involves aspects to the sun and Neptune that highlight the power of mentorship. We all need someone to check in with. A champion to cheer you on and hold you accountable to your own goals and happiness is important at every life stage. If you don’t have this, make it a point to get it in 2020.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Being the center of attention might be uncomfortable for some, but not for you, not today, because you’re so ready for it. Besides, what you have to contribute from this highly visible spot will help many.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). People are drawn to you because they believe you will lead them to the next good place to be. Maybe it’s a heart or headspace rather than a physical location. Even better! Expand horizons without expanding the carbon footprint.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The bigger person in the situation is usually the calmer person, the one who is considering the most people, thinking of the long-range results and generally acting selflessly.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You’ll think about how you might be healthier in the upcoming months, beginning with the changes you could make to your work or daily routines. Start small. Better yet, start teeny. Micro habits are the answer.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Your taste in media will develop in different directions, a reflection of changing needs and growing curiosities. The fun part will be the new friends you’ll make along the way who share these interests.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). If, in the spirit of getting a fresh take on the new year, then you decide to do some decluttering, you will find the most fascinating things in your own file cabinet and drawers.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You are the bright light in another person’s night — a role you didn’t ask for, but now, like the lighthouse helping a ship avoid the rocky shore, you’re ennobled by the responsibility.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). As the sign of transformation, you find that a purge of the old year’s unnecessary baggage is a thrill. Consider extending the clean-up effort to digital files and social media.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Take a moment to imagine how you want these last breaths of the year to go. Make a plan to support your best-case scenario. Whether or not you stick to the plan, you’ll be better for having one.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You’ll make the most of this opportunity to reflect on the last year. To augment your fortunes, choose one thing to leave in the past and one thing to double down on in the future.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). This is the best day of the year, not because it’s the last, but because you have done as Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested, “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Some of your ideas about the New Year reflect your priorities and some reflect your fantasies. In the months to come, you’ll be moving those two categories closer together, starting today.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 31). You seek to see the world from other people’s windows. There is always something to learn from another culture and a different point of view. You don’t have to agree for the knowledge to be valuable to you. Because of your openness, your life will be filled with interest, excitement, acceptance and love. Leo and Cancer adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 40, 2, 28 and 11.

NEW YEAR’S EVE SUPERSTITIONS: Are you ready to ring in the New Year right? For many, this means following traditions and superstitions. But why stick to the tried and true when you can create your own rituals to fit your preferences? After all, not everyone likes black-eyed peas. Even so, here are some ideas used by cultures around the world:

In Estonia, eating several meals (at least 12!) on New Year’s Day is said to supersize one’s strength in the months to come.

In Brazil, homage is paid to the spirit of the ocean to bring on the bounty of the new year. White flowers and other offerings are tossed into the waves.

In Scotland, the first guest to enter your house in the new year had better be bearing gifts! They don’t need to be anything too crazy — some bread, salt or even coal will do. The point is to set the tone for a year of welcoming and receiving.

In many places around the world, it is customary to, in the first moments of the year, make a lot of noise via banging on pots and pans, sounding noisemakers, hollering and the like. This is both raucous revelry and an alarm to ward off the evil spirits. Happy New Year!

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Since being invited by Sir Laurence Olivier to join the Royal National Theater, the extraordinary Sir Anthony Hopkins has been knighted, awarded by the Academy and lauded many times over for his service to the arts, which extends from acting to directing, producing and notable philanthropy. Hopkins was born when the sun, moon, Mercury and Venus were all in powerful Capricorn.
