Barron Trump joke, and jokester, fall flat

Note to Stanford law professor Pamela Karlan: Keep your day job.

Because stand-up comedy is not your forte.

Karlan, a Democratic witness at the House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment hearing, tried her hand at joking Wednesday when she said that the president can “name his son Barron, he can’t make him a baron.” According to the Associated Press, Karlan was trying to make a point that Donald Trump is a president, not a king.

Which she could have done by saying “Donald Trump is a president, not a king.” But for some reason Karlan confused the venue with open-mic night at Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View. She also failed to read the room.

Republicans were quick to criticize, and first lady Melania Trump took to Twitter to point out “a minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics.”

The first lady added that Karlan “should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.”

By the way, professor: President Trump can make Barron a baron. Anyone can, thanks to the sovereign principality of Sealand (seven miles east of Britain). The nice folks there sell the titles of lord, lady, baron, baroness, count or countess and even duke or duchess. Ed Sheeran’s been a Baron of Sealand since 2012. And all for about 79 bucks.

Karlan apologized, saying “it was wrong of me to do that,” adding, ”I do regret it.”

But the damage has been done — not to Barron so much, but to the Democrats, who’ve been losing the thread on the impeachment hearings from the start, and don’t need another hip-check to their credibility.
