Michelle Wu, Essaibi-George, Flaherty hold at-large council seats; Garrison ousted
Michelle Wu came out on top and Julia Mejia ousted incumbent Althea Garrison in the Boston city council’s at-large race.
“I am so excited to join a group of new colleagues and continuing colleagues who will be able to take on big issues for the city and begin to do so with boldness and urgency,” Wu told the Herald. “That’s the mandate that we have from voters.”
This election was seen as a bellwether for a possible 2021 run for Wu against Mayor Martin J. Walsh.
Annissa Essaibi-George and Michael Flaherty, two more incumbents, came in second and third, with newcomer Julia Mejia unseating Garrison for the fourth at-large spot.
“We set out to change the game to make sure the people who were most impacted were front and center in this conversation,” a jubilant Mejia told supporters in Jamaica Plain.
In District Five, Ricardo Arroyo declared victory over Maria Farrell in a race to replace the retiring Tim McCarthy.
“I’m deeply grateful to the residents of district five for believing in me and believing in a future that’s inclusive,” Arroyo told the Herald.
