Mayor Walsh asks Bostonians to watch out for homeless during cold snap

Mayor Martin Walsh is asking Boston residents to watch out for homeless people as the temperature plunges Tuesday night through Wednesday night.

“If you see someone out on the street that you’re worried about, call 911,” Walsh told reporters during a chilly impromptu news conference outside City Hall on Tuesday night. He said people can also call 311 or use that service’s app or website to submit other complaints or requests.

Jim Greene, the director of emergency shelters for the Boston Public Health Commission, said 150 more homeless shelter beds will be open in preparation for the cold snap.

Forecasters have said that the day may well end up being the coldest Nov. 13 on record, and may include brutal wind chills into the single digits. The National Weather Service on Tuesday night said the overnight low would be just 19 degrees, with a wind at 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph.

The mercury is then expected to rise to 31 on Wednesday, but with high winds maintaining the wind chill threat throughout the day. The weather service then predicts the temperature dropping back down to 21, with winds petering off after midnight. More seasonable temperatures in the high 40s are expected to return later in the week.
