Local nuns kick off their 24th National Christmas Concert in Boston
The countdown to Christmas is in full effect, and one local choir is looking to bring some joy just in time for the holidays.
The Daughters of St. Paul Choir in Jamaica Plain aren’t your average choir group. They are nuns, and to kick off their national “He Is Born” Christmas concert tour, they performed a mini concert at Downtown Crossing on Saturday.
“This country is going through a difficult time right now, and we want to bring some positivity back into people’s lives,” said Choir Director Sister Margaret Timothy Sato. “We want to bring the spirit of hope and joy to people from different walks of life.”
Their heavenly voices and choreography drew a large crowd in awe of their performance. Children laughed, couples embraced and happily clapped along to their nostalgic Christmas hits including “Silent Night” and “Deck the Halls.”
Fans of the choir group came from various cities to support them. “They are fabulous and energetic and have beautiful voices,” said Medford resident Jean Smith.
“It was so joyful, so uplifting. Everyone was moving to the energy … the holy spirit was just really responding within everyone,” said Lesley of Medford, who didn’t want to provide her last name.
These sisters call themselves the “Media Nuns.” In order to spread the gospel, they use all means possible to share their work and to teach media mindfulness through their signature social media hashtag #medianuns.
“The Christmas concerts that we produce truly bring Christ into the hearts of concertgoers everywhere,” said Sister Nancy Usselmann, a choir member and the director of the Pauline Center for Media Studies in Los Angeles. “No one who attends our show is ever the same — you will be stunned by nuns! Each year I wonder, how can we create a new experience that’s even better and more profound than the last? The ‘He is Born’ concert tour includes new original music and a surprise tribute to Aretha Franklin that we love because it expresses who we are as media nuns as friends in prayer interceding for each person we meet.”
The Daughters of St. Paul are set to kick off their national tour, performing 12 concerts in nine cities from coast to coast.
