Lincoln-Sudbury ends Medford’s season

LYNN — On Thursday, the Lincoln-Sudbury boys soccer team was named the MIAA Division 1 North champion. On Saturday, the Warriors won it on the field, defeating Medford, 2-1 at Manning Field. L-S (19-1-2) will play Needham in the state semifinals. This is the Warriors’ second straight sectional title.

Medford (16-2-1) played in the final after receiving an injunction in court on Friday overturning its forfeit for using an ineligible player.

“To come out like this I was really proud of them,” said L-S coach David Hosford. “To go from playing to not playing to playing.”

L-S’s Evan Goetsch scored the winning goal in the 61st minute off a corner kick from Sean Desmarius.

“He was on the right and he hit a nice lefty inswinger,” Goetsch said. “I was there and I was fortunate to put it in.”

The score was tied at halftime, with the Warriors scoring first in the 24th minute, Ben Forman hit a shot off the left post that hit a Medford player and went into the goal. The Mustangs tied the score in the 27th minute when Kendy Prince headed in a kick from Felipe DeSouza. The Warriors had three good chances early in the second half, but two went wide and another was saved.

With five minutes left, L-S’s Joseph Mepham blocked a shot from France Kely. A minute later, the Mustangs’ Enzo Zertolini had a header that went off the mark.

“To be able to hold them to one goal is amazing,” Hosford said. “Our plan was to slow them down but you can only slow them down so much. We got a few lucky bounces but that’s a part of soccer.

Medford coaches and players were not available for comment after the game.

“It didn’t turn out the way we wanted but I was proud of the effort,” said Medford Superintedent of Schools Marice Edouard-Vincent. “We’d do it again. We’ll learn from our mistakes so an adult clerical error like this won’t happen again.”
