King Philip dispatches Oliver Ames in girls soccer quarterfinal
WRENTHAM — The apprehension King Philip coach Gary Pichel felt about facing Oliver Ames for a third time this season dissipated early in Thursday night’s Division 1 South quarterfinal.
The Warriors, who defeated the Tigers twice in the regular season, attacked from the outset to put Pichel at ease as OA couldn’t slow down KP’s abundance of offensive weapons. The top-seeded Warriors featured three different goal scorers to once again take down the eighth-seeded Tigers, 3-1, at rainy Macktaz Field.
“My worry started to diminish once I saw how hard we were coming out and taking it to them,” said Pichel as the Warriors advance to next Wednesday’s sectional semifinal. “They were playing that defensive style, so we were going to have our way until we finally scored.”
OA (14-5-1) doubled team Hockomock League MVP Chloe Layne and fellow star striker Avery Snead every chance it got, but KP (20-0) still controlled played from the opening whistle.
The Warriors broke through in the 36th minute when Jenny Montville lofted a high, arcing shot into the corner of the net.
Jenna Hitchen helped extend the lead 7:20 into the second half when OA goalie Emily Meyers (10 saves) redirected her blast off the crossbar and Snead crashed the net to put home the rebound.
Ally Stanton added another tally in the 59th minute in a scrum off of a Makayla Griffin corner to give KP a commanding 3-0 lead.
“We get big contributions from Jenny Montville, Jenna Hitchen and Ally Stanton,” Pichel said. “That’s three other players they have to worry about along with Chloe and Avery.”
While OA created scoring chances off set pieces and added a late goal from Camryn O’Connor, the Tigers couldn’t generate enough quality shots as KP has now outscored its opponents 88-6 this season.
