Danvers volleyball still perfect with win over Lynnfield
TEWKSBURY — The perfect run continues for Danvers.
The third-seeded Falcons won all three sets to sweep No. 1 Lynnfield, 3-0, to capture its first Division 2 North sectional title at Tewksbury High School.
“We knew what we were matched up against coming in,” Danvers coach George LeVasseur said. “These kids were just ‘Hey, it’s an extra day to play volleyball’ and that’s the way they kept looking at it.”
From the first serve, Danvers (24-0) looked in control as they led 14-5 early in the first set. Lynnfield (23-1) rallied to take a 21-20 lead with a 16-6 run before the Falcons closed it out, 25-23, with a 5-2 spurt.
“These girls have come in with confidence not only on game day, but also in practice,” said LeVasseur. “They love being here and being together.”
The offense went through junior Lily Eldridge all night as she compiled 29 assists to go along with three aces and three kills.
“(Eldridge) did a great job of spreading the ball,” LeVasseur said. “She really did a great job of moving the ball around. It starts with our setter and trickles down from that.”
Eldridge exuded confidence in the second and third sets as she set up kill after kill for her teammates and aided in a 15-6 run to end the second set to make it a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 advantage in the second set.
“I was so energized before the game,” Eldridge said. “We did a really good job. We didn’t really have a plan going into the game except be confident and we really did that.”
The Falcons continued to dominate in the third as they led 21-13 before the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run with the help of three aces and a kill from freshman Ella Gizmunt (eight kills, four aces). Danvers went on to close out the match with a 4-2 run.
Danvers will face Dennis-Yarmouth in the state semifinals on Wednesday.
