Commuters cock an eye at MBTA’s Commuter Rail plan

Skeptical commuters in Boston Monday questioned the massive cost of the T’s plan to overhaul the Commuter Rail, though some said upgrades — despite projected price tags of $10 billion to $29 billion — are a long time coming.

Angela Johnson, 38, of West Roxbury: “They’ve already spent millions and raised fares, and I haven’t seen any improvements with the service. I’m just not hopeful at all anymore with it. How much more are they going to increase prices for this? How much more?”

Louise Jones, 69, of Dorchester: “My goodness, $10 billion is a lot of money. It’s really not fair for taxpayers. They shouldn’t have to pay for it. It’s not fair, but for those on the Commuter Rail, it’s important for them. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn into a flop.”

Jeff Jordan, 58, of Boston: “I’m all for making improvements and upgrades, and upgrades are much needed and way overdue, but where is all this money coming from? If passes went up a few dollars per month, I wouldn’t mind that. More trains more often would definitely help alleviate congestion in trains. They can be so congested.

Tom Cooper, 70, of Chelsea: “I agree with spending money on existing infrastructure. That really needs the work. You should fix what you have, and have a long-term plan to handle transportation overall. I think we’re doing too much of a scatter approach. I don’t have a car, so any gas tax won’t affect me. That won’t cover everything we need to get done, though.”

Louis Bailey, 65, of Jamaica Plain: “$10 billion is probably not enough. They have a lot of stuff to improve on, with reliability and new cars. How do you pay for it is always the challenge. You have to think about raising fares and the excise tax on gas should be increased.”
