Tom Brady passes Peyton Manning for second in career passing yardage
FOXBORO — Tom Brady went into Thursday night’s game against the Giants needing just 18 yards to pass former rival Peyton Manning and move into second place on NFL’s all-time passing yardage list, and he completed the task rather quickly.
On the game’s second play, the Patriots quarterback hit Sony Michel, who scampered for a 19-yard gain to move Brady into sole possession of second. With the completion, Brady — who’s in his 20th season — went up to 71,942 passing yards. Manning finished his career with 71,940 passing yards in 17 seasons.
Brady now only trails Drew Brees, who 74,845 passing yards. The 40-year-old Saints quarterback is still active, but currently out due to injury, so Brady stands to gain some ground on him until he returns.
NFL records only account for regular-season statistics.
Brady also passed Manning for third in career passing completions on Thursday night with a pass to James White midway through the first quarter. Brady (6,126 career completions and counting) now trails Brett Favre (6,300) and Brees (6,621).
