Police: Two dead in Winthrop crash; alleged drunken driver charged
Two people died Sunday after a drunken driver operating a convertible struck a parked pickup truck in Winthrop, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The two passengers in the convertible who died were a 28-year-old Winthrop woman and a 29-year-old Beverly woman.
The driver of the convertible, a 30-year-old Winthrop man, is expected to be charged with operating under the influence of liquor and other charges related to the two deaths. The driver sustained “injuries not considered life-threatening,” according to police.
Troopers from the Revere Barracks responded at around 3 p.m. to reports of a serious injury crash on Winthrop Shore Drive near Neptune Avenue. A 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse struck an unoccupied 2013 Dodge Ram pickup.
The 28-year-old Winthrop woman was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, and later died at the hospital.
The 29-year-old Beverly woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troop A Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Winthrop Police and Fire, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner assisted on scene.
Winthrop Shore Drive at Neptune Avenue in Winthrop was closed in all directions during the crash investigation and reconstruction. All lanes were opened at around 6:58 p.m.
