Great skincare – you masked for it
Usually in October when you mention masks, you’re talking about Halloween. So it’s either ugly, a little scary, or something that doesn’t look like you at all. Well, it may be edging closer to Oct. 31, but we’re going to talk about masks that do the opposite — ones that make you even more beautiful, and make you look like yourself at your very best.
Far beyond a trend for beauty product junkies, the masks that are out there today can get real results at home and come in different materials and with many different purposes, for varied types of skin. They can do everything from removing impurities and excess oil to infusing vitamins, moisturizing and firming. I personally don’t recommend them as a replacement for regular facials and skincare by professionals, but they can be a terrific and cost-friendly adjunct to that important self-maintenance.
Sheet masks: Generally made of cotton, these are effective because they protect their ingredients from evaporating and hold them on the skin, so they’re able to better penetrate the skin. One that helps with impurities is Burt’s Bees Detoxifying Charcoal Sheet Mask ($2.39 on burtsbees.com), which has embedded charcoal to cleanse your skin’s surface gently. A great pick for dry skin is Hada Labo Tokyo Ultimate Anti-aging Facial Mask ($9 on amazon.com). The beauty company is the biggest in Japan, and is widely loved for its gentle moisturizing (it contains no parabens, fragrances, dyes or mineral oils), via collagen, soy peptides, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, all of which work to plump up and firm your dermis.
Sleeping masks: These ingenious numbers are face masks that you apply directly to your skin and allow to seep in overnight. One favorite: Glow Recipe’s Avocado Melt Retinol Sleeping Face Mask ($49 on sephora.com), which uses its rich cream full of avocado, encapsulated retinol and PHA to combat dryness. So you after you wake up and wash, you’ve got one of the softest faces around. Another smart pick, this time for hydrating and smoothing, is Herbivore Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment ($58 on herbivorebotanicals.com). Slather its antioxidant-filled goodness on and by morning you’ll have some of the most supple skin you’ve had in years.
Gold and silver masks: These may seem out of a cheesy sci-fi flick, but their metallic materials work overtime to lock in the ingredients and deliver them to your skin. One winner is Estee Lauder’s Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask ($82 for four on esteelauder.com). Use it weekly for 10 minutes to get a double-dose of both Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair serum and hyaluronic acid. And for great cleansing, there’s Majestic Pure Gold Facial Mask ($21.50 on amazon.com), which gets slathered on, left for 15 or so minutes, and washed off to reveal brighter skin, fewer fine lines and, no doubt, a smiling you.
