Bruins come from behind, hold on to beat Vegas

LAS VEGAS — There may have been questions around the Bruins offense following their first two wins of the season, but they answered them with flying colors on Thursday.

The Bruins outscored their first two contests by the second period in Vegas, coming from behind to topple the previously-undefeated Golden Knights on the road, 4-3.

For the first time this season, the Bruins (3-0-0) trailed, going down 2-0 to open the first period, but took just 12:22 to tie things back up and tallied twice in the second period to take the lead and never look back.

With Brett Ritchie in the box for goalie interference, the Golden Knights (2-1-0) power play struck with 13:23 left in the contest. Mark Stone netted his second goal of the season on a shot that clipped Tuukka Rask’s glove and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Reilly Smith doubled that lead with 11:40 to go, taking a pass from Jonathan Marchessault in the corner and tipping it through to go ahead 2-0.

The top line, which struggled to provide offense in the first two games, got going in the first period, and Brad Marchand would tally twice to lead an offensive resurgence.

Off a turnover, Marchand was patient with the puck and slid a pass to the charging David Pastrnak, who buried his first goal with 8:39 to go in the first frame and make it a one-goal game.

It appeared the Knights may have tallied their third goal of the period with 5:03 left, but the puck was tipped up high by Marchessault, and was immediately called no goal.

It took just 33 seconds into the second for the Bruins to establish their first lead of the game.

Marchand powered through the offensive zone and fired a shot over Marc-Andre Fleury’s glove to take a 3-2 advantage.

Torey Krug extended that lead with 17:33 left in the frame with a blast from the point deflecting in front past Fleury. David Backes forced a turnover in the offensive end to get it to Krug.

The Bruins earned two power plays in the third period, and while they didn’t score, they held Vegas off the board, too; the Golden Knights entered Tuesday with three shorthanded goals, and hadn’t allowed a power play tally until Marchand’s in the first.

Max Pacioretty made it a one-goal game in the third with a power play goal with 5:18 left to play.

Matt Grzelcyk appeared to get injured in the first period when he blocked a shot just 35 seconds into his shift and went down the tunnel, but he returned for the second period.

Rask made 29 saves in his second win.

The Bruins end their four-game road swing in Colorado on Thursday night.
