Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plans to endorse Bernie Sanders
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plans to endorse U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders at his campaign comeback rally in New York City on Saturday, his campaign confirmed to the Herald.
The progressive darling’s endorsement represents a coup for Sanders and a blow for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, both of whom have courted the star freshman congresswoman’s support.
Sanders teased the endorsement during Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primary debate in Westerville, Ohio, after being asked by a moderator to assure voters of his health following his heart attack in Nevada earlier this month. Following the debate, Saturday’s “Bernie’s Back” rally in Queensbridge Park marks Sanders return to the campaign trail following his stent surgery.
“Let me invite you all to a major rally we’re having,” Sanders said. We’re going to have a special guest at that event and we are going to be mounting a vigorous campaign all over this country.”
Sanders and Warren have been vying for the progressive vote throughout the Democratic presidential primary. Warren recently snapped up the endorsement of the Working Families Party, which backed Sanders in 2016. But Ocasio-Cortez, who represents Queens and the Bronx, worked on Sanders’ 2016 presidential bid.
News of the endorsement broke at the tail end of Tuesday’s debate.
