Legal immigration right road to citizenship
We are staunchly opposed to illegal immigration and the chaos that lawlessness wreaks in the nation.
We completely understand the desire to come to the United States, the land of the free. Most of our ancestors came here from somewhere else. There’s opportunity, freedom, hope. Of course people want to come here.
But the borders need to be meaningful, and process must be adhered to. We can’t allow a free-for-all. Legal immigration is a wonderful thing. People willing to participate in the process of becoming Americans are welcome to.
Hundreds of people will do just that today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center at 1350 Tremont St. in Roxbury, where the city will host its sixth annual Citizenship Day. The city will assemble 400 trained volunteers to help eligible lawful permanent residents with their applications for naturalization and fee waiver applications at no cost.
The city says this is the largest citizenship workshop in New England, organized in collaboration with Project Citizenship. In the past five years, more than 1,400 eligible applicants have applied for citizenship with the help of volunteer attorneys, law students and community members.
Boston, and indeed Massachusetts, has been the landing place for countless new citizens for centuries. Like America, we are a melting pot. In a state where the issue of immigration is a hot topic, we’re on board with the prospective new neighbors who have respected the process and are seeking to become full-fledged participants in the American Dream.
