Patriots re-sign OT Conor McDermott before free agency

The Patriots re-signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott over the weekend, a source confirmed to the Herald.

McDermott, 30, started the Patriots’ final six games at right tackle last season. Amid multiple injuries and poor performance at the positio, the Pats signed McDermott off the Jets’ practice squad on Nov. 22. He is expected to fight for a roster spot in training camp this summer.

Last year, McDermott allowed three QB hits and eight hurries in his six game appearances. After a trying start, he helped solidify the right side of the Patriots’ O-line from Weeks 15-17, but then yielded several hits and hurries in their regular-season finale at Buffalo. He replaced starter Isaiah Wynn and Yodny Cajuste, who both dealt with health and performance issues last year.

Wynn and Cajuste are both set to hit free agency next month.

The Boston Globe first reported McDermott’s new deal.
