Cold Case: ‘Boston’ Tank top information sought in 1993 murder of 10-year-old girl
Authorities in western Massachusetts hope that a “Boston” tank top could be the key to solving the abduction and murder of a little girl 30 years ago.
The last time a family member saw 10-year-old Holly Piirainen alive was at around 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 5, 1993, when she walked down the road in Sturbridge in the area of Allen Road and South Shore Drive, Hampden DA Anthony Gulluni said at a Wednesday morning press conference.
When her father called her in as missing an hour later, Gulluni said, he had said she was on her way to pet some puppies she knew to be at an area home.
Her father set off in search of her but would find only a sneaker on South Shore Drive. Local and state police, as well as contingents from Connecticut and Rhode Island, would join in a “massive” search, Gulluni said.
Sadly, it would be area hunters who discovered her body two-and-a-half months later, on Oct. 23, 1993, in a wooded area off Five Bridge Road in Brimfield.
“It is our mission to deliver justice for these victims and their families. For all of us involved, it is a solemn and deeply meaningful obligation. In this endeavor, we work as many hours as we can devote, we spare no expense, we deploy only the best investigators and resources and we employ the latest technology,” Gulluni said at the press conference.
“However, in many instances, we can’t do it alone. We need the public’s assistance; we need someone who knows something to stand up with us and do what is right,” he continued.
In particular, the DA’s office is looking for anyone with any information regarding a white tank-top shirt decorated with the word “Boston” colored in pink, purple and blue in front of the city’s skyline.
Evidence from the area around Holly Piirainen’s body has remained in State Police custody ever since, and has been subject to testing in recent months, according to the DA. The tank-top was a clear standout, but the adult-sized shirt lacks any identifying information.
