Pic’s Picks: Pats get healthy vs. Jets
(15-19-1 against the spread in 2022)
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (-2.5) over New York Jets
While we’re all talking about the Patriots’ quarterbacks, Bill Belichick is probably more concerned with his defense allowing 33 points to the Bears on Monday night. The 3-4 Patriots will be ready for Zach Wilson, who, last season, threw no touchdowns and four interceptions in two losses to New England. The Jets are 5-2 and have won four straight. But Wilson has just one passing touchdown and two interceptions this season. Pats win and cover with some Nick Folk heroics at MetLife.
MIAMI DOLPHINS (-3.5) over Detroit Lions
This game has the highest over-under of the week, at 51.5, which should make your mouth water over the thought of Tua Tagovailoa going up against the 1-5 Lions defense, which ranks worst in the NFL, allowing 32 points per game. The 4-3 Dolphins are coming off a win over the Steelers in Tagovailoa’s return from a concussion. He threw the ball 35 times on Sunday night, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he throws the ball 50 times this Sunday afternoon in Detroit. I’ll take Miami to win and cover.
DALLAS COWBOYS (-10) over Chicago Bears
Dak Prescott returned last Sunday in a win over the Lions. He didn’t look great though. I’ll chalk that up to rust. The Cowboys are 5-2. They host a 3-4 Bears team that’s coming off a huge win in New England. The emotional play here would be to take the points, especially with Ezekiel Elliott injured. But the Cowboys still have the second-best defense in the NFL. They’ll bring Justin Fields back down to earth. Dallas wins big at home.
GREEN BAY PACKERS (+11) over Buffalo Bills
Things are bad right now for the 3-4 Packers, who’ve lost three straight. A game in Buffalo isn’t the best recipe for a turnaround. But the 5-1 Bills are coming off the bye, so perhaps Aaron Rodgers catches them slipping. Buffalo’s defense is No. 1 in the league, allowing 13.5 points per game. Green Bay’s pass defense is No. 1 in the league, allowing 169 yards per game. I’d stay away from the moneyline. It’s not often that Rodgers gets 11 points. I’ll take the Packers to cover on Sunday night.
CINCINNATI BENGALS (-3) over Cleveland Browns
The elephant in the room on Monday night in Cleveland will be that Joe Burrow is 0-3 against the Browns. But these Browns are 2-5 and have lost four straight. Burrow found his groove the last two weeks, putting up 30 points in New Orleans in Week 6, and then 35 points against Atlanta last Sunday. It feels like the 4-3 Bengals are about to go on a run, even without the injured Ja’Marr Chase. I don’t expect Cleveland to interrupt. Cincinnati wins and covers.
