Kvetch of the Day: What is Belichick up to?
Welcome to Kvetch of the Day, your chance to ask us your burning questions.
Kelby Roche of Pittsfield is one of many trying to decipher what Patriots coach Bill Belichick is doing with his unorthodox staff situation.
“By only having offensive and defensive play-callers in place of full-blown coordinators, instead of being some kind of new genius move, is Bill Belichick actually trying to avoid the Rooney Rule? (Mainly, the condition that an outside candidate must be interviewed.)”
Patriots beat writer Karen Guregian responds: “Hi Kelby, I can certainly see where some might believe the Patriots are skirting the Rooney Rule. I’m just not sure that’s the case in this particular instance. It’s likely more about saving money, not having full-blown coordinators. Both Joe Judge and Matt Patricia are still being paid by their former teams given they were let go with time still left on their respective contracts as head coaches. I’m pretty sure that changes if they move on and get certain titles with other teams. It’s also possible Bill Belichick is doing them a favor so they can collect a greater sum of money for another year or two, as opposed to taking a paycut with coordinator pay. Either way, it seems like a win-win for the Patriots, and for Judge and Patricia. At least, that’s my best guess at what might partially explain the unorthodox coaching situation at hand.”
