Raiders hiring Patriots de facto GM Dave Ziegler as general manager, per report
Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler is expected to become the new general manager of the Raiders, according to the NFL Network.
Ziegler interviewed for the Raiders’ GM vacancy on Jan. 21, roughly a year after he was promoted to the top position in the Patriots’ personnel department. As the team’s de facto general manager, Ziegler helped enact key changes to the team’s evaluation process that yielded instant results. Last offseason, the Patriots rebuilt through the largest free-agent spending spree in NFL history and compiled a strong draft class that included three immediate contributors, including starting quarterback Mac Jones.
Ziegler spent nine seasons in New England, rapidly rising up the ranks from assistant director of pro scouting to director of pro scouting then assistant director of player personnel before assuming his final title last winter. He arrived after breaking into the NFL in 2010 with the Broncos. Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, then the head coach in Denver, originally hired him for a low-level personnel position.
It’s expected McDaniels will become the next head coach in Las Vegas, teaming with Ziegler, a longtime friend and former college teammate, to rebuild the Raiders. McDaniels has not completed a deal with Raiders brass, but it could be done by the Sunday evening.
