Stephon Gilmore sends not so subtle message to the Patriots via Twitter
At this stage, it’s hard to know if Stephon Gilmore’s contract holdout will extend into training camp.
But given his latest tweet, the Patriots shutdown corner isn’t hiding what’s on his mind four weeks before camp — money.
Gilmore, whose 2021 base salary is $7 million, put up a post on Twitter which provided a list of the 10 highest-paid defensive backs in the NFL.
With that figure, he’s nowhere near any of the top ten, to which he remarked on the tweet: “Oh ok.”
To this point, there hasn’t been any signs of progress on either providing Gilmore a bump up for this season, the final year of his deal, or extending the contract at a higher salary.
Gilmore, who was the 2019 NFL defensive player of the year, wants to be paid like one of the top corners in the league. The Patriots certainly need him to contend, but also look at his age — he’s going to be 31 in September — and the fact he’s coming off a quad injury. So they don’t necessarily want to commit big dollars.
Gilmore held out of mandatory minicamp, and did not take part in any of the voluntary OTAs or practices as a sign of his displeasure over the contract. He’s reportedly been in town working out at a local high school.
