Ryan Brasier hospitalized after being hit in head by line drive, Red Sox reliever in stable condition

Red Sox relief pitcher Ryan Brasier has been hospitalized and is in stable condition after he was hit on the right side of his head by a line drive during a simulated game on Thursday in Fort Myers.

Manager Alex Cora said Brasier is under observation at the hospital and he’s been in contact with him via text message, which is a good sign for his status. Cora said they were trying to figure out if Brasier suffered a concussion and he would have more information by Saturday.

“What I just ask from you guys is pray for him and your thoughts for his family,” Cora said.

It was another brutal break for Brasier, who’s had a tough year personally and physically. He fractured his pinky finger during workouts over the winter before missing the start of spring training due to personal reasons. Then, he suffered a left calf strain at the end of spring training, which cost him the start of the season.

The plan was for Brasier to get through Thursday’s sim game and then fly to Boston before being sent out on a rehab assignment next week, but that’s on hold for now. Cora was encouraged that he was able to communicate with him.

“It’s been a tough four or five months for him,” Cora said. “So, it wasn’t a baseball text. It was just, he’s one of our guys, he’s been here for three or four years, and we care about him. So, we put baseball out of the equation, and this is about the individual, and we just want him to be healthy. …

“Pray for him so he can recover sooner rather than later. But he’s in a stable condition. The fact he was able to text me back, tells you a lot.”
