Rachael Rollins takes jab at Marty Walsh over the Dennis White police scandal

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins is calling out former Mayor Martin Walsh about his last-minute decision to hire now ex-Police Commissioner Dennis White, saying Walsh either knew about the domestic violence allegations against him “and he’s lying, or he didn’t know about it,” and was a terrible manager.

The former mayor has been adamant that he was unaware of past allegations of domestic abuse against White at the time he appointed him the city’s top cop earlier this year.

But White’s predecessor, former Police Commissioner William Gross, in a signed court affidavit claimed he and then-commissioner William Evans in 2014 personally reviewed a BPD internal affairs report about White and briefed Walsh about it.

Rollins on Sunday was asked if she believed Walsh or Gross.

“One of those men filed an affidavit that was signed under the pains and penalties of perjury, and one of those men said it didn’t happen,” Rollins said on WCVB TV on Sunday.

A signed affidavit “trumps” someone simply saying it didn’t happen, the Suffolk DA said.

“This is a bad situation overall because either he (Walsh) knew about it and he’s lying, or he didn’t know about it and you’re a terrible manager,” Rollins said of Walsh.

“There was no vetting process in this? It’s just … it’s sad,” she added.

White was placed on leave just two days after Walsh appointed him commissioner in February after allegations surfaced that he had abused his ex-wife.

Acting Mayor Kim Janey fired White earlier this month, and said there will be a national search for the next commissioner.

The acting police commissioner will continue to be Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long. Rollins said Janey’s move to keep Long in place was the right one.

“He has been doing tremendous work keeping this enormous department — there are 2,100 people in the Boston Police Department — and Greg Long is doing an incredibly difficult job very, very well every day,” she said.

Rollins also said she is one of three candidates being considered for U.S. attorney of Massachusetts.

“I am so humbled and honored to be in that group,” Rollins said, later adding, “I worked in that office for almost five years. I started in the civil division, and then I went to the criminal division. I believe I am more qualified to be in that office than I thought I was to be the district attorney, only because I worked there.

“But this job that I’m in right now, I promise you and I’ve had some amazing jobs in my life … this is the best job I’ve ever had in my life,” she said. “It is a hard job, but I have never been more fulfilled and humbled in the strength that I see in the people in Suffolk County even in terrible circumstances.”
