Possible drowning in Scituate as man pulled from waters; condition unknown
A man was pulled from the water in Scituate more than an hour after he disappeared underwater near the Edward Foster bridge on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.
Emergency responders rescued the man from the waters near Peggotty Beach just before 4 p.m. His condition is unknown.
“At 2:45 p.m. the Coast Guard received a call about a missing man near the Edward Foster Bridge who was seen entering the water, but did not come out,” Petty Officer Briana Carter told the Herald.
Multiple agencies, including a coast guard boat and helicopter as well as local police and fire departments, responded. Divers from the Scituate Fire Department recovered the man and brought him to shore, Carter said. He was taken to a local hospital.
News of the man’s potential drowning comes amid a spike in drownings statewide as ponds, lakes and beaches have been left largely unguarded with the state grappling with a life guard shortage spurred by the coronavirus pandemic.
