Massachusetts reports 1 new coronavirus death, 63 new virus cases

Bay State health officials on Tuesday reported one more coronavirus death and 63 new cases, continuing the trend of lower deaths and infections amid the vaccine rollout.

The recent daily average of 1.7 deaths and 55 cases are both the lowest average counts of the pandemic. Sunday’s 31 new virus cases was the lowest single-day count since last March.

More than 8.6 million total vaccine doses have been administered in the state, and almost 4.2 million people are fully vaccinated, according to Tuesday’s vaccine report. Last week, the state hit its goal of 4.1 million fully vaccinated people.

Overall, the more than 8.6 million total doses administered breaks down to: more than 4.4 million people who have received one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; more than 3.9 million people who have received both doses of Pfizer or Moderna; and 275,093 people who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

After Massachusetts health officials reported 63 cases on Tuesday, the estimated active case count is down to 1,361 infections. The estimated active case count was around 100,000 during the winter surge.

The state’s total recorded death toll is 17,993 following the one death reported on Tuesday.

The number of COVID patients currently in Bay State hospitals is down to 104, which is a daily increase of nine patients. The pandemic low was 94 patients last week.

There are now 31 patients in intensive care units, and 15 patients are intubated.
