Seekonk rolls into South Coast Conference title game with win over Bourne

SEEKONK — When Seekonk and Bourne met earlier this season, the former jumped out to a big early lead before the latter made a spirited rally and lost a competitive, four-quarter game.

When the two met again Friday night, it was similar — except for that second part.

Seekonk took an early lead and never let up, dominating from start to finish for a 34-8 victory in a South Coast Conference Gold Division semifinal.

“We had a lot of mistakes, mental mistakes (in the first meeting of these teams, a 28-19 Seekonk win),” said Seekonk coach Vernon Crawford, a former New England Patriots player. “We had a lot of penalties, silly penalties. We just kind of cleaned up those things, no foolish penalties, and just played hard. We (concentrated on cutting out the mistakes), and that’s what we did.”

With the win, the Warriors (5-1) will host the title game next weekend against the winner of the Fairhaven-Case semifinal. Bourne’s season is over at 1-4.

Seekonk won the toss and elected to receive, and immediately went down the field and scored. Quarterback JT Moran ran in an 8-yard touchdown, but Robbie LeBeau had 46 yards rushing on the drive on just six carries. For the game, LeBeau had 125 yards on 14 attempts.

After Aiden Peterson recovered a Bourne fumble on the next drive, Seekonk went back to work. Moran hit Greg Desmarais for a 4-yard touchdown pass, and Moran’s two-point rush made it 14-0 with 32 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Warriors increased that lead to 22-0 by halftime, as Will Smith powered in another touchdown, this time from 2 yards out.

Moran completed 9 of 12 passes for 61 yards, as the offense as a whole was efficient. Harry Murphy, who had a 55-yard touchdown run late in the game, finished with 100 yards on six carries. LeBeau scored a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter that made it 28-0 and effectively put the game away.

“I think it is (the best the Seekonk offense has played this season),” Crawford said. “But I kept telling everybody, we’re getting better and better each week. We started off a little slow out of the gates, but we’ve been slowly putting things together and putting things in perspective. I just know we can be better.”

Bourne avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter when Kelly DeSimone rushed for a 10-yard score.
