Third quarter flurry pushes Concord-Carlisle past Lincoln-Sudbury
SUDBURY — A matchup between two of the top teams in the Dual County League ended with the final score surprisingly one-sided.
Concord-Carlisle got the better of Lincoln-Sudbury on the road as three tallies scored in a 15-minute span in the third quarter gave the Patriots a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
“Great game and huge rivals,” said Concord-Carlisle head coach Ray Pavlik. “Just glad we are out here doing it.”
With the game knotted up 1-1, Concord-Carlisle (6-1) took advantage of open space as senior Nicolas Santos netted one home in the 42nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. A beautiful cross led to a strike for sophomore Benjamin Brown in the 48th minute to make it 3-1.
Junior defender Wolfe Berrouet buried a shot from about 40 yards out to put the game away in the 56th minute and build a 4-1 advantage.
“I saw the space, so I decided to take it,” Berrouet said. “They were giving me way too much space. I saw the keeper off his line. Initially, I was going to cross it, but with my left foot, I just shot it.”
The Patriots outshot Lincoln Sudbury (3-2) 21-5 throughout the match.
The Warriors got on the board first on a direct kick for Miguel Rosa to take a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute after several shots for Concord-Carlisle were unable to find the back of the net.
“(Lincoln-Sudbury) hit a great strike and it was a great job on his part (to get it in),” Pavlik said. “I thought we responded well, which is good.”
The Patriots tied it up 1-1 eight minutes later as John Berlam buried a shot in the box after multiple stops for the Lincoln-Sudbury defense.
The two teams faceoff again on Saturday at noon at Concord-Carlisle.
“All the pressure is on us now,” said Berrouet. “We better show up and play better.”
