Man shot dead in Jamaica Plain as pandemic gunplay in Boston keeps climbing
Police are seeking the public’s help in solving the shooting death of a man in his 40s found mortally wounded Wednesday night in Jamaica Plain as gunplay during the pandemic keeps climbing.
A call triggered by the department’s Shotspotter detector sent police to Parker Street where police said the victim “in his mid-40s” was found suffering from “multiple gunshot wounds.” Police on patrol also heard the shots.
The unidentified man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said late Wednesday night.
“A preliminary investigation shows this is not a random act of violence,” police told reporters at the scene.
Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins, who was also at the scene, condemned the shooting “right in front of a playground,” a community center and near the Jackson Square Orange Line station.
“I want to thank the community for letting us know when there are problems,” Rollins said.
Police said they have a trauma team available and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call homicide detectives or the anonymous tip line. Call the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS, or text the word “TIP” to CRIME (27463).
As of Oct. 18, BPD statistics show there have been 39 fatal shootings in Boston this year, compared to 24 over the same period last year.
In non-fatal shootings, the brutal trend is the same, with 184 so far this year compared to 139 last year.
The homicide comes on the same day Boston Police Commissioner William Gross met with U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling on curbing gun violence.
“The rhetoric has gotten completely out of control,” Lelling said at the round table with police chiefs and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “The idea of defunding the police is absurd. If anything … we should be reinvesting in police.”
