Red Sox add Zack Godley to starting rotation vs. Yankees

Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke is rectifying his mistake.

After watching Zack Godley throw four dominant innings as the fourth pitcher in a blowout loss to the Mets this week, the Sox skipper announced that Godley would be pitching as a starter his next time out.

Saturday, Godley will take the mound for the Red Sox against the New York Yankees in the Bronx.

Godley was a late pickup out of free agency a week before the season started and threw a few impressive innings against the Blue Jays in an exhibition game at Fenway Park, but was optioned to start the season. He returned and made his season debut against the Mets after the Sox were already down 7-0.

With a filthy curve/cutter combination, he struck out seven batters in four scoreless innings.

If Godley stays sharp after joining the rotation, it would give the Sox two reliable starters along with Nate Eovaldi. They’re still hoping Martin Perez and Ryan Weber can turn it around. But they really need Darwinzon Hernandez (fatigue) and Eduardo Rodriguez (heart issue) to return from coronavirus complications. Josh Taylor has been badly missed in the bullpen, too.

They’re not out of it yet, but at 2-4 to star the year the Sox are desperate for quality innings and hope Godley can give them some on Saturday.
