Devin McCourty on Cam Newton being a Patriot: ‘I’m happy to not play against him. He always kills us.’
With the breaking news of Cam Newton joining the Patriots, both Jason and Devin McCourty provided immediate reaction during their Sunday night podcast, “Double Coverage with the McCourty twins.”
Both members of the Patriots defensive backfield gave the move a thumbs up, as Newton reportedly agreed to a one-year deal.
Said Devin: “I’m happy to not play against him. He always kills us.”
Jason McCourty said he was “excited,” and loves the Patriots adding more good players.
“Bill (Belichick) always says … your goal is to have as many good players as possible. Cam Newton is a former MVP of this league,” said Jason McCourty. “He played in a Super Bowl, he’s that caliber of a player. So I think the better players we have in our locker room, the better we’re going to be able to perform as a team.”
Brother Devin agreed.
“I think when you add a guy like Cam Newton, it makes our quarterback room even better. We’ve spoke about it before, the poise and the jump and leap you expect Stiddy to make,” McCourty said about Jarrett Stidham, who was the expected to be the immediate starter on the post-Tom Brady era. “It’ll be interesting just training camp, and competing … I would think adding him to our quarterback room with (Brian) Hoyer. You have veterans in there. You have young guys in there. I think it’ll give us a really good chance to be good at that position. It’s always great to have a bunch of good players, and adding to that.”
Devin McCourty also indicated he wasn’t shocked by the news of the Patriots bringing in Newton, and adding a more accomplished quarterback to the mix with Stidham and Hoyer.
“I’ve said it for weeks, I’m never shocked by anything we do as a Patriots organization … everything we do is always in the thought process of trying to win and win championships,” said Devin. “I think that’s what it comes down to, trying to make the team better. I’m never surprised when we’re trying to do that. Hopefully when we get together, everything goes as planned, and we can try to win games.”
The Newton news had McCourty’s cellphone buzzing with texts.
“I know this is the news everyone’s been waiting for with the NBA coming back, MLB, NHL and football around the corner. It’s like everyone’s going to start to get overloaded with sports,” said McCourty. “I know all the big networks are happy. This will give them great topics for Monday . . . already, I’m getting text messages like crazy. It’ll be a fun time, and I think a proven veteran to enter your locker room is always great.”
Added Jason: “More competition is going to bring the best out of all of us.”
