What is the Committee on Oversight and Reform?

The Committee on Oversight and Reform is the main investigative committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and will play a major role in the impeachment investigation into President Trump.

The committee oversees the federal government and all of its agencies to “ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability,” the committee’s website states. “The Committee oversees government operations, health care, information technology, interior, energy and environment, national security, and intergovernmental affairs.”

Some of the committee’s other investigations include the 2020 Census citizenship question — opposed by Democrats — and family separation at the southern border.

The chair of the committee is always selected from the majority party and the ranking member is the most senior member of the minority party. The ranking member is U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan from Ohio.

The chairman was Elijah Cummings, who died two weeks ago.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch of South Boston has announced he’s running to fill the spot. California U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier announced last week she was also in the running.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York to replace Cummings in an acting capacity based on Maloney’s seniority.
